What Is Burger Sauce?
A lot of restaurants and chains have this pinkish or orange sauce on their burgers. It’s often called Burger Sauce or Special Sauce. But what is it? It’s usually a combination of mayonnaise, ketchup, and relish. It therefore makes total sense that it tastes great on a burger, right?
I make my homemade burger sauce recipe with just those few ingredients: mayo, ketchup, and relish. My preference is dill pickle relish, because I like it more savory and garlicky. If you like yours on the sweeter side, which is the case with most of the restaurant versions, you can use sweet pickle relish instead.
Since the relish is providing lots of flavor, I found in my testing that additional ingredients like mustard or vinegar simply weren’t necessary. I used pickle juice in an early version, but found that the relish provided plenty of liquid and it didn’t need extra. If you’d like to add something extra, feel free to customize to your tastes, maybe with some garlic powder or paprika.
Making And Storing
To make your homemade burger sauce all you need to do is mix up your ingredients and refrigerate it for 15 minutes so that the flavors can meld together. Any extra you have leftover can be stored in an airtight container and put back in the fridge for up to two weeks.
