If you’re looking to switch up burger night, look no further than this delectable pan-fried Shrimp Burger recipe!
I love cooking with shrimp and am always looking for new ways to enjoy it. So when I heard about shrimp burgers, I knew I had to create my own version. I wanted my shrimp burger recipe to be easy to make and not rely on too long of an ingredient list. I ended up with a great burger patty that holds together well and a seasoned mayo that perfectly compliments the shrimp, all ready to eat in about half an hour.

What Kind Of Shrimp Should I Use?
For this shrimp burger recipe, you’ll need a pound of raw shrimp for every four burgers. You want to make sure they are peeled, deveined, and have their tails removed. The size doesn’t matter too much since they are getting chopped and pureed anyways, so don’t worry about whether they are medium or jumbo shrimp.
I almost always have frozen shrimp in my freezer, and you absolutely can use frozen, but you will need to thaw the shrimp before starting to make the patties.
Ingredients For Shrimp Burgers
Other than the most important ingredient, the shrimp, the list is fairly short. You’ll need a red bell pepper and half an onion, some butter and salt, plain breadcrumbs, and some seasoning for the patties. I like it with Creole seasoning, but you could also use my copycat Old Bay seasoning. They are both great options that taste fantastic with the shrimp.
The seasoning goes both into the shrimp patties and the mayonnaise, you’ll want to use the same seasoning blend for both. Other than that, all it really needs is some Romaine lettuce and burger buns.
Why Aren’t We Adding Egg To The Burger Patties?
I tested this recipe both with and without using an egg as a binder. While both ways ended up working, the recipe with the egg required the use of more breadcrumbs and less shrimp flavor came through in the final product. Skipping the egg was the clear winner.
How To Make Homemade Shrimp Burgers
Start by sauteing your bell pepper and onion with butter and a bit of salt in a nonstick pan. You’ll want to cook them until soft and just starting to brown, about six minutes. Sauteed veggies give the patty much better flavor and texture than just adding them in raw.
Let the sauteed veggies cool while you start on the shrimp. You’ll want to divide the shrimp in half. Half of the shrimp will get blended in the food processor and the other half will just get a rough chop. In the food processor, you’ll want to turn the shrimp into a smooth, fluffy paste, this works amazingly to help hold the patties together.
Transfer the shrimp paste and the chopped shrimp into a mixing bowl along with the sauteed veggies, breadcrumbs, and a tablespoon each of the seasoning and mayonnaise. Stir to combine and then form the shrimp mixture into four equal patties.
To cook the shrimp burgers, heat oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the burger patties and cover the pan. Cook for six minutes, flip, and continue cooking for an additional six to eight minutes, until the internal temperature registers 160°F on an instant read thermometer.
While the burgers are cooking, make your seasoned mayo by combining your seasoning blend, either Creole or Old Bay, along with half a cup of mayonnaise. This simple condiment really ties everything together and makes it feel more like a traditional burger. The shrimp burger isn’t dry without it, but it’s way better with.
Then, assemble your burgers on a bun with lettuce and the seasoned mayo. Look how amazing that looks with the pieces of juicy shrimp throughout the burger patty! So good.

Listen to learn how to make this recipe, along with some great tips from Christine:
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp. butter
- 1 red bell pepper, seeded, minced
- 1/2 medium onion, minced
- 3/4 tsp. salt, divided
- 1 lb. raw shrimp, peeled, deveined, tails removed
- 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 2 Tbsp. Creole seasoning, divided
- 1/2 cup + 1 Tbsp. mayonnaise, divided
- 2 Tbsp. cooking oil (olive oil, vegetable oil, or grapeseed oil)
- 8 Romaine lettuce leaves, ribs removed
- 4 burger buns, split
Instructions
- In a small nonstick skillet heat butter over medium heat. Add bell pepper, onion, and ¼ teaspoon on the salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are soft and just begin to brown, about 6 minutes. Set aside to cool.
- Meanwhile, place half of the shrimp and remaining salt in a food processor. Blend on high, scraping down the sides until a smooth, white, fluffy paste has formed.
- Chop remaining shrimp into ¼-inch pieces.
- Transfer shrimp paste and chopped shrimp to a large mixing bowl. Add sauteed vegetables, breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon of the creole seasoning, and 1 tablespoon of the mayonnaise. Stir to combine. Form into four patties, each about 1-inch thick.
- In a nonstick skillet heat oil over medium heat. Add shrimp burger patties. Cover pan, cook 6 minutes, adjusting heat as needed to prevent burning. Flip burgers, continue cooking uncovered until golden brown on the outside and burgers register 160°F on an instant-read thermometer inserted into the middle of one of the burgers, about 6 to 8 minutes more.
- While the burgers are cooking, stir together the mayonnaise and remaining tablespoon of creole seasoning. Set aside until ready to serve.
- To build a burger, add lettuce to the bottom of one of the buns. Place shrimp burger on top of lettuce. Add 2 tablespoons of the creole mayonnaise on top of the shrimp burger and add top bun. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
