Who knew you could use the air fryer to make chicken fajitas for dinner? All you have to do is combine sliced chicken, peppers, and onions with fajita seasoning in the tray.
It’s no secret that I love my air fryer. Even though I’m not a fan of many fried foods, I love the way it cooks and crisps things quickly. This air fryer chicken fajita dinner comes together in a pinch and the chicken strips are so juicy in the middle.

What Are Fajitas?
Fajita is a Tex-Mex dish that includes grilled meat that is served on a tortilla. Skirt steak was the first meat used for this dish, but now a variety of meats are used – including chicken. We even have a vegetarian version! Onions and peppers are usually cooked with the meat and other toppings can be added at the table if you’d like – think cheese, sour cream, and salsa.
Chicken Fajitas In The Air Fryer
It’s really easy to make these chicken fajitas. All you have to do is slice chicken, peppers, and onion and coat them with olive oil and my favorite fajita seasonings – chili powder, cumin, cayenne, salt, and pepper. You can instead use a 1 ounce package of fajita seasoning, or 2 tablespoons of homemade fajita seasoning.
Once everything is coated with a little bit of oil and seasonings, you pour the mixture into the tray of the air fryer and let it cook for about 18 minutes. I always check my food in the air fryer frequently because it can cook quicker than you think from time to time.
Serving Fajitas
Fajitas are traditionally wrapped in tortillas, but feel free to get creative. You could always make a rice bowl or a salad instead. This really is a perfect quick dinner or meal prep solution!
Complete your dinner with sides of rice (use the Instant Pot!), guacamole, or Mexican Corn Salad.

Maenette Wahrenburg says
This is an easy, go to meal with busy kid life. I also use the thin sliced steak and make steak fajitas too.
Christine Pittman says
That sounds wonderful, Maenette! Thanks for commenting.
Katie Berry says
Wow! I am in love with this recipe, Christine. I put everything together in a big bowl this morning and left it in the fridge. After work, I dumped it all in the Air Fryer and followed your cooking instructions to a tee. The flavor is amazing and it was ridiculously easy. Thanks for a great recipe!
Christine Pittman says
I’m so happy to hear that, Katie! It’s such a tasty, low-effort dinner. :)
Stacy says
Using a fajita spice blend, how much should I use to replace all the spices, I’m thinking 4 1/2 tsp?
I’ve made this numerous times but ran out of cumin and have a fajita blend I’d like to use up.
Christine Pittman says
If your fajita spice blend has salt, that sounds like the right amount of spices. If not, use closer to 3 and 1/2 tsp and add 1 tsp of salt. Enjoy, Stacy!
Ann says
Chicken fajitas are one of my husband’s favorite meals. I have tried multiple recipes over the years and I never really liked any of them. I decided to try this recipe since it’s been so hot and I could use the air fryer. This is absolutely the best fajita recipe I have ever made! We both thought it was outstanding. The chicken was so tender and the vegetables were perfectly crisp/tender. My husband will be very happy because I will be making fajitas much more frequently now!
Christine Pittman says
That’s wonderful news, Ann. Thank you so much for taking the time and letting me know. Fajitas for everyone! :)
Sharon K. says
Made this for supper tonight. It was so easy to put together and cook in our air fryer! Was a huge hit and will definitely be making this again and again. It’s a keeper!
Christine Pittman says
Love to hear that! Thanks for taking time to comment, Sharon.
Jaylene Hughes says
Can you use frozen chicken fajitas to make this. If so would you thaw or cook the meat first.
Christine Pittman says
Jaylene, If you are using a chicken product that has heating instructions on the packaging, please heat the chicken according to those instructions. Cook the vegetables on their own in the air fryer. Once your chicken is cooked according to the package instructions, toss it with the veggies in the air fryer just for the last 3 minutes of cooking in the air fryer.
Becca says
I have the same question! I have a gourmia from costco that has an air fry, bake, roast option. I never know what to use.
Linda says
I made this for supper tonight, it was amazing. I didn’t change a thing. We sliced chicken on the thick side and it was nice and juicy.
Christine Pittman says
That’s fantastic, Linda! Thanks for letting us know.
Kassi says
What does one serving consist of? Like how many fajitas? Planning to make this soon!
Christine Pittman says
This usually works for 2 fajitas per person, Kassi. Enjoy!
John says
Hi! I have an air fryer oven. The trays have holes in them. If I was to put the chicken and veggie mix directly on the grate all of the remaining oil & seasoning mix would fall to the bottom of the oven. Should I place a piece of foil on the tray before placing the mixture on the tray? Thanks! I’m looking forward to making this.
Christine Pittman says
Using foil to line the tray sounds like a great plan, John. Enjoy!
Alex L says
I used chicken thighs for the recipe because it was all I had but they were the juiciest fajitas I’ve ever made. Thanks for the recipe, I’ve been slowly gathering recipes to use for my air fryer
Christine Pittman says
That’s great to hear, Alex! We love the air fryer and have lots more recipes for you to try!
Kelsey Heermann says
I feel dumb for asking this question, but is the chicken supposed to be cooked or raw when you mix it with veggies and put in the air fryer?
Christine Pittman says
Not a problem, Kelsey! The chicken is raw when you put it in the air fryer. Any of our recipes that need you to start with a cooked ingredient will specify that in the list. Enjoy!
Nancy says
This recipe resulted in the best and easiest fajitas I’ve ever made! The chicken was moist and tender. I air fried at 390 (lowest setting I have) for about 17 minutes, stirring every five minutes or so. I did not use the grate in the basket — wasn’t sure if I should, but glad I didn’t. Thanks for the recipe. So much easier than making fajitas on the stove and they were excellent!
Christine Pittman says
That’s wonderful to hear, Nancy! Happy you enjoyed!
Pam says
I would definitely remove the grate , I just made this exactly by the recipe and it was dry ? I’m a little disappointed
Christine Pittman says
So sorry to hear that, Pam. Thanks for your feedback though.
Krystina says
Would I remove the grate from my air fryer to cook this recipe?
Christine Pittman says
All models of air fryers are different, Krystina. Mine doesn’t have a grate but does have a basket. But mine won’t run without the basket in place. My question would be, what would you do if you were going to cook something thin that could fit through the grate, baby carrots, for instance? If you would remove the grate for those, then I would remove it for this.
Diane says
On your chicken fajita recipe what setting do you set your air fryer to? Mine has 3 settings, Air Fry, baked and roast. My air fry setting is the highest and automatically sets at 400 degrees. It can’t be lowered to 360.
Thank you
Christine Pittman says
The air fryer we used to create this recipe has temperature options. Which kind do you have, Diane? If we have that information hopefully we can figure out adjusted instructions for you!
