Bacon Recipes for Brunch – Bacon Canapes

Brunch Week can’t go by without me sharing some bacon recipes. Now, I can’t make bacon recipes healthy but I can share the recipe for these bacon canapés, which are certainly a healthier option than a big platter of bacon strips.

Bacon Canapés: One of my all time favorite bacon recipes for brunch

I can’t make bacon good for you. I’m not a wizard.

But oh, if I was a wizard! Bacon. And then cheese and fries and burgers and brownies.

Would life ever be good!

But I’m not a wizard and there is only so much that I can do about bacon. So what I’ll do is give you some advice to make bacon less bad for you: Find bacon recipes that consider portion control.

At your next brunch, instead of putting out a big platter of bacon strips, put out small bits of bacon. But to make people not look at you like you’re crazy (“Who is this lady cutting up my bacon? Bacon isn’t meant to be cut up! It’s meant to be in big long strips that you chew on like bars of taffy!”) you need to do something to make those small pieces seem natural.

Today I’m sharing one of my all time favorite bacon recipes where you take those small bits of bacon and add a dollop of maple syrup mixed with yogurt and top it with a piece of orange.

Bacon Canapés: One of my all time favorite bacon recipes for #BrunchWeek by @cookthestory

They’re bacon canapés!

The idea is, instead of putting out a whole big platter of bacon strips, you put out a nice plate of delicious little bacon morsels. People (you and your waist-trimming self included) will take two or three, and maybe even another one or two for seconds. The result is at most 2 strips of bacon, which is nowhere near the 5 or 6 you (or I!) would have snagged from that platter.

And you know what, these little babies taste so good and look so pretty that nobody will ever notice the healthy bit of portion-control and piece of fruit that you’ve added to their lives.

But they’ll thank you.

Oh, and if you’re craving more bacon-y goodness in a healthier form, be sure to also check out my recipe for Sweet Onion-Bacon Jam.

Now here’s the recipe for bacon canapes.

Because bacon recipes taste good, no matter how you cut the bacon.

Bacon Canapés

These bacon canapés are one of my all time favorite bacon recipes. They're super-easy and super-delicious because they're made of bacon, after all. Look, all bacon isn't created equal. If yours won't lie flat and crisp and gets all curly and wimpy, no worries. Just use a toothpick to hold it all together. Easy as can be!

  • 8 thick-cut slices of bacon
  • 2 tbsp Greek yogurt
  • 2 tsp maple syrup
  • 24 orange segments (from about 2-3 medium to large oranges)

  1. Lay the bacon slices in a cold pan so that the don't overlap. Put the pan over medium-low heat. Cook the slices until crisp but not brittle, about 7-10 minutes, turning ever few minutes. To keep them flat, use a bacon press.
  2. Remove the bacon to a plate lined with paper towel to drain off some fat. Once they're cool enough to handle. Use kitchen shears or a knife to cut each slice into 3 equal-length pieces. Transfer the bacon pieces to a serving tray.
  3. In a small bowl combine the yogurt and maple syrup.
Scoop about 1/4 tsp of the yogurt mixture onto each piece of bacon. Top each one with an orange segment. If the bacon isn't crisp and sturdy, secure every stack together with a toothpick. Dig in!

Bacon is always the answer. I like how it’s sitting in for bread/crackers here; better option for those who have to watch the gluten/grains.

Oranges and bacon didn’t sound all the appetizing at first, but I’m verrrrry intrigued by this recipe! If only there was someone else in this house who shares my love of bacon!

What a great idea to use the bacon slice as the vessel for the dish! I love pairing fruit with bacon.

Ohhh how I love bacon! What perfect little bites! The bright orange flavor must pop in contrast to the bacon. Great idea!

Clever! See now I’ve done the candied bacon thing at brunches, but never this. I love bacon, so versatile and umm… yeah you’d absolutely see me at the table trying to be sneaky grabbing pieces of this when no one is looking.
