A Keurig Review & Ice Brewed Drinks With Friends At BlogHerFood

Last week Keurig sent me a Keurig K75 Platinum Brewing System and a selection of Brew Over Ice K-Cups to try. Today I’m bringing you my Keurig review and a story about meeting an old friend at BlogHer Food in Austin.

As a blogger, I get to meet old friends for the first time all the time. Whenever I go to a blogging conference or blogger meet up I find myself walking up to someone and saying, “Hey! You’re X? I’m Christine from Cook the Story!” Then we hug, laugh and chat like we’ve known each other forever.

And we sort of have.

At BlogHer Food last week I finally met Sam from Sweet Remedy. I first got to know Sam when Katie and I talked with her about Ice Cream in one of our YouTube Chats. I adored her breathless excitement during our talk and then went on to discover that I also loved her blog.


Especially her pictures.

Sam takes these deep dark food pictures that make you feel like you’re sitting in a warm kitchen with your grandmother drinking tea and talking about her days on the old family farm. Here’s an example:

Oh, this picture! It’s like I can see over the knife, bread, jam and jars to where my Baba is canning hand-picked fruits and vegetables at the counter.

Except of course kiwis don’t grow in Manitoba. It would have been a rhubarb jam. There was plenty of rhubarb. Plenty. My Baba used to sprinkle a quarter inch of sugar into a glass, hand it to me and then send me outside to find my Gee Gee who would give me a raw rhubarb stalk to dip into sweet granules and eat.

So when I was putting together a proposal for a photography panel for BlogHer Food, Sam was a natural choice. She said yes. We met for the first time at the airport in Austin. We talked photography, health, men and, of course, food.

And we spent some time hanging out with the Keurig people. You see, they had iced coffee and iced teas on offer all weekend. It was a no-brainer that between sessions that is where we went!

I drank A LOT of the Keurig Brew Over Ice treats while at BlogHer Food, which is why I shouted out an enthusiastic YES when they asked if they could send me a Keurig Machine and some Brew Over Ice K-cups to sample and to help me write a Keurig Review.

I was just a bit excited when it all arrived:

And I’m even more thrilled with it now.

I have to admit that I’ve always been someone who would choose a hot coffee or tea over a cold one. And when I first moved to Florida I was beyond confused that if I ordered tea the default was for it to come cold (same goes for lattés in many places. It felt so wrong!).

But now that I’ve been here a few years, I get it. And now that I can instantly have freshly brewed iced teas and iced coffees, I get it even more! My favorite is the Celestial Seasonings Half and Half (that’s half black tea and half lemonade). Not too sweet, not too lemony – just right.

A Keurig REview: The K75 Platinum Brewing System and Brew Over Ice K-CupsSo how does it work? The Brew Over Ice K-Cups are a bit more concentrated than the regular K-Cups so that the flavor works perfectly when diluted by melting ice.

You fill a large glass with ice. Really full of ice. Then you put the glass of ice in the brewing machine and let the hot liquid drip over the ice. Make sure you use the recommended brew size so that you get the perfect flavor and so that your drink ends up really cold. Stir. Drink. Be refreshed!

Before I sign off, I want to say something else about the Keurig that I hadn’t expected. The water that comes out of it is REALLY hot. And that is a REALLY good thing. It makes perfectly steamy single servings of coffee.

But more importantly for a cooking fiend like me, it means that I have instant nearly boiling water on hand all the time.

Just yesterday I was braising a roast in the oven. The liquid level got a bit low in the pot. I normally would have put the kettle on to boil and waited until it was done before adding extra hot water. But with the Keurig I just went through an empty brew cycle (make sure you remove your previous K-Cup!) and had hot hot water to add to my roasting pan. I also deglazed a pan with some hot water from the Keurig and used some to defrost some frozen noodles quickly for the kids.

An amazing bonus to having this machine, right?

Let’s just say I’m really happy with my new Keurig. As happy as I was to finally meet my old friend, Sam. It’s been a good couple of weeks!

    Planning to buy a Keurig. It will definitely help boost the flavour of my coffee, and that bread and jam would perfectly fit to serve on the table when my parents will come visit me at home.. :)

    Hi Christine! I’m a coffee lover as well (it keeps me awake specially long blogging sessions), and I have to say, the Keurig K75 is one of the best not-so-expensive coffee maker so far. I know there are probably better makers out there but prices are just too high, and the taste they produce is not that far. Definitely recommend this product to your readers.

    I drank a lot of the brew over ice too at BHF! I’m so glad we both got to meet Sam in real life (and I got to room with her)! :) Congrats on the new coffee machine!

    Oh gosh! “deep dark food pictures” are exactly what I try to accomplish lately. I’m really glad they are actually coming off that way! You’re too sweet Christine. Thanks for being a pal. It was awesome hanging with you all weekend! We are totally cute in that photo!

    I love my Keurig…I’m sitting here right now enjoying my coffee. I loved that they had it at Blogher because I got to try all the Brew Over Ice stuff! So fun.
