Grilled Pears Filled with Hot Caramel and Chocolate Sauce

Grilled fruit is a sure sign that summer is on its way. These grilled pears are filled with caramel and chocolate before grilling so that everything heats up and the sauce gets decadently hot and gooey.

One day when cutting and coring pears for a snack, I decided they needed a little something. I warmed up some peanut butter and drizzled it in.

Then I thought, I bet I can make something like this into a delicious summertime dessert!

What Type Of Pears?

For this recipe I used Taylor’s Gold Pears. These pears come from New Zealand and are at the peek of freshness from April until July, making them the perfect choice for summer recipes. They’re very juicy and sweet with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. When heated, they get soft enough to cut with a fork.

Making Grilled Pears

I decided that to make a filled pear dessert, the fruit needed to soften up before eating. I popped some pear halves onto the grill to see if that would soften them enough. It did! And the flavor of grilled pear turned out to be a real treat – it reminded me a bit of campfire marshmallows, all sweet and toasty.

I decided to fill the pears with caramel sauce (the store-bought kind) before grilling them. To make it a bit more special, I added some chocolate chips. While the pears brown on the bottoms, the caramel and chocolate inside get hot and gooey.

The pears get soft and buttery from being grilled. Your fork will slide through the pear easily, and a glorious puddle of caramel and chocolate will soon cover your plate. (Best to add some ice cream to catch those drips).

Description

These easy grilled pears are filled with caramel and chocolate before grilling so that everything heats up and the sauce gets decadently hot and gooey.

Ingredients

  • 4 Gold Pears
  • 4 Tbsp. caramel sauce
  • 32 chocolate chips
  • 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare grill for medium-heat direct cooking.
  2. Cut pears in half. Set pears cut side down. Cut a flat 1/4 inch slice off of the roundest part of the pear (this is so that the pears will be less likely to tip over on the grill). Flip pears over. Use a spoon to scoop out the core from each pear half, making a round bowl in each, approximately the size of a half golf ball.
  3. Transfer pears to a flat tray. Pour 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce into the bowl of each pear. Add 8 chocolate chips to each.
  4. Use tongs and a metal lifter to carefully transfer the pears to the grill. Cover the grill, opening it to check on the pears occasionally. Cook until pears have softened, dark grill marks appear on the bottoms, and the chocolate chips have melted, about 7 minutes.
  5. Use a small spoon to stir the chocolate into the caramel in each pear half. Use tongs and metal lifter to remove pears from grill.
  6. Serve each person 2 pear halves and 1 scoop of ice cream.
