Homemade garlic knots are delicious and so easy to make. Learn how here.
Garlic knots are a staple appetizer in pizzerias. Why? Because they’re bready and garlicky and everyone loves them.
It turns out they’re really easy to make at home. Next time you’re having friends over for a casual evening, you can make a batch for everyone to munch on before dinner. Or just make a batch anytime just for you because you deserve a delicious snack.

How To Make Garlic Knots
I usually start with this Homemade Pizza Dough but you can also use a store-bought pizza dough. My grocery store sells it in the bakery section. It comes in a 1 pound ball in a plastic bag. If using store-bought dough, let it come to room temperature before beginning. If using homemade dough, make the dough, knead it as instructed, let it rise for 1 hour (covered) and then punch it down before beginning.
Step #1
Sprinkle a large baking sheet with 2 teaspoons of coarse cornmeal.
Step #2
Roll and/or stretch the dough into 10 x 16-inch rectangle. Put it onto a large cutting board. Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut it into 12 10-inch long strips.
Note: If you want softer, fluffier garlic knots, roll dough to an 8 x 12-inch rectangle and cut into 10 8-inch long strips instead.
Step #3
Tie each strip into a loose knot and put it onto the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining strips. Dust the tops of the garlic knots with kosher salt (1 teaspoon is enough to get a bit on each knot). Cover with a clean tea towel and let rise for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F.
Step #4
Remove tea towel and bake uncovered until golden in places and cooked through, 15-20 minutes.
Step #5
Just before the garlic knots are ready to come out of the oven, put ¼ cup of unsalted butter, cut in pieces, into a small microwave safe bowl. Microwave butter 20 seconds at a time until completely melted. Stir in 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. You could instead use some of my best garlic butter recipe here for even more flavor.
Step#6
Use a metal spatula to get under the garlic knots in case any of them stuck to the pan a little bit. Transfer them to a big bowl. Drizzle with the butter and then use a large spoon to stir them gently so that they are all coated in butter. Transfer buttery knots to a serving plate and sprinkle with ¼ cup of finely shredded Parmesan cheese and ¼ cup of chopped fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley. Serve immediately.
