My parents had restaurants when I was growing up. I’m therefore very familiar with how much work goes into owning a restaurant. I also know how much love goes into it. And how much passion.

When I opened Joanne Chang’s cookbook flour, too I was taken back to those days when my parents were in the trenches.

This is a book that lets you into the inner-workings of a successful Boston restaurant, Flour Bakery. But it’s not just a description of the average day in the shop (although that is how the book opens) it’s also a book full of Joanne Chang’s successful café recipes.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, appetizers, sweets – it’s all in flour, too accompanied by beautiful pictures, but not jsut of the food. The staff and the customers are all in there too making you feel like you’re there with them, about to pour that first morning cup of coffee or bite into the famous egg sandwich.

(The inside cover of my signed copy of flour, too. So cool that I had to share it on my Instagram account).

Each recipe has a wonderful headnote that gets you closer to understanding why this Boston café has been such a success. Whether it’s Chang’s insistence that gluten-free goods be loved by all customers (not just those with a restricted diet) or the way they take classic dishes and give them their own twist, you learn some great secrets about what it takes to have a successful restaurant.

But what I noticed as I read, more than anything else, was the happy passion that shines from the author’s words. She’s doing what she loves and sharing it with others. That reminded me of my parents. What they did, making and sharing that delicious food, made them happy. What she does clearly makes Chang happy too, which in turn makes her customers, and her cookbook readers, happy.

You know what would make me happy? Biting into Flour’s Famous Egg Sandwich. I just might go make one now. I mean, this book even has their Focaccia recipe in it so I can do it all!

You can be happy too: Enter below for a chance to win a copy of flour, too by Joanne Chang.

Hmm in her first book she talks about a potato bread that they use I would get that with the roast beef.

      Rachel,
I’ve actually heard that their hummus is fantastic at flour. Great choice!

her grilled portabello melt sound so good, I saw she had a curried tuna sandwich but I would probably switch tuna for chicken as I love love the curried chicken salad a store across town has. I indulge a couple of times a year and bring it home.

The book sounds lovely. Unfortunately because of the internet, recipe book sales are plummeting. I do find reading a recipe book very comforting.

The roasted turkey sandwich sounds perfect!
