- 1 Tbsp. olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, peeled and chopped
- 2 ribs of celery, chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 lb. lean ground beef
- 1 lb. sausage meat
- 1/2 tsp. dried basil
- 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. black pepper
- 4 cups tomato sauce
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, carrot, and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally until softened, about 4-5 minutes.
- Add the garlic and stir until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
- Add the ground beef, sausage meat, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Use the back of a wooden spoon to break up the meat until it’s in fine crumbles.
- Cook, stirring occasionally until meat is no longer pink, about 5-8 minutes.
- Drain the fat from the skillet then stir in the tomato sauce to the meat mixture and heat until bubbling. Reduce to a low simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes.
- Taste and add more salt and pepper if desired.
